Cathy:  great to have you on this forum - we sure get around.  Your experience as a highly qualified RW pilot will be useful here, too.  I hope you get the login sorted, you will find Steve and his group of mods are helpful.

As to the autopilot I have found this.  First make sure the take-off checklist has been completed. This is a real procedural sim, above all set the trim accurately in the FMC (the trim value comes from the Configurator utility).  The autopilot will only engage after you have set a roll mode (LNAV or Heading), and there is no pressure on the controls ie trimmed hands-off) The Flight Director must be on, of course, and if you set LNAV and VNAV before takeoff, with A/T set ON, you can handfly by following the needles - it is a fun experience and the plane is beautiful to fly.

The main thing of course is that there is no pressure on the yoke or pedals - that's why hunting for the trim after takeoff will prevent the Autopilot engaging.

It is no problem at all, but this is full procedural trainer, and so far the only thing that doesn't work are the dome lights, and I am sure that will be fixed.  As well as putting the HUD on the 800 and 900 series as it is optional in the RW market.
Warmest Regards,

Ian McPhail

Whoops:  and then set the trim value manually within the green zone on the trim indicator down on the throttle quadrant - the FMC turns the percentage from the Configurator into a number like 4.5 and these are on the trim indicator. Around V1\Rotate the plane literally flies itseof off the ground

Sorry if I become more confusing when I try to explain simply!
Warmest Regards,

Ian McPhail

Thanks, macca, my experience of the737 was limited to a few flights as a guest on the NAC 737's but these were the steam gauge planes: I chose the IFly over PMDG because you get the complete range and PMDG is not available yet. I will not bother with PMDG but WILL get the CS 737/100/200

Macca, my problem was a combination of not having the trim set correctly and my Eclipse yoke not centering. The latter cured with the application of virgin olive oil to the shaft, which sounds somewhat obscene! (Australian, of course, one must buy the local product)

I hope you haven't made a big mistake using oil on the yoke as oil and plastic do not work well together. Silicon grease is the correct lubricant to use with plastic. I know both my CH yoke and Saitek ones have plastic bearings inside for the yoke shaft to move against. Using oil can make the yoke sieze up completely.

Dave.

Cathy: glad the trim helped.  I had quite a bit of bother getting my Saitek yoke to calibrate.  I got all sorts of of advice, but without registering FSUIPC it came right after several repeats of the calibration.  Why or How only the deity knows, but it works great now.

I'm a bit worried about the oil though! Virgin?

My problem with the iFly is that since I bought it, I have done nothing but fly it, and as a result a stable of expensive add-ons sits unused on my sim.  All that Colin Lowe should do now, is paint an Air NZ livery and we can fly in NZ and across the Tasman.  I refuse to fly a Jetstar or Virgin aircraft in NZ.  Aussie invaders!

Ian McPhail

Oh Cathy, and if you look in the Flight1 download site where the liveries are located, there is an excellent checklist by Michael Swannick.

Only those people who didn't watch HOW (UK TV only I think) in their formative years.

I've seen the water rotation thing done on the two sides of the equator. I think you have to be at least three yards on either side of it to work, but i have seen it done on TV with no break in filming or editing. Way cool.

Which I coincidentally watched this weekend.

There's no better animation series as the Simpsons.

D'oh!

Coriolis force at work - but gravity still attracts to the centre of the Earth.  So you don't get your own back.

Must be a bit anal to watch your deposits disappear and pick the direction of rotation!
